pivotal key thematic subjects… That most of the time is completely
missing from available subtitles (as is from the Netflix ones), or is
barely audible in some dubs.
This happens right after Shinji is ejected from Unit 01, and Misato is giving Ritsuko a lift.

The radio commentary here is about Misato & Kaji, but notice how radio host gender flips the relevant parties. Over radio, it’s the boyfriend taking advantage of the girlfriend whom he sees as both a lover and a mother in all its contradictory glory. The radio host pities the girlfriend, lamenting that “she’s sensitive to how she’s loved”, but puts up with the boyfriend’s antics because she is “kind”.
